How to choose a mortgage lender in Florida: questions to ask

Banks, credit unions and mortgage companies all offer home loans. Here is how to compare them and what to ask before you commit.

Many places offer home loans

Home loans come from banks, credit unions, online lenders and mortgage companies. They differ in the programs they offer, how flexible they can be when your situation is not standard, and how well they communicate during the process.

What to look for

Programs, requirements and costs vary, so the best fit depends on your numbers and your goals.

  • Programs that fit your situation, such as self-employed income, a condominium or an investment property.
  • A single licensed loan originator who guides your file and answers when you call.
  • Clear explanations of the tradeoffs between the options that fit you.

What to ask any lender

Any licensed originator should answer these plainly.

  • Who will be my point of contact, and how quickly do you respond?
  • Which loan programs fit my situation, and what are the tradeoffs?
  • Can you provide a Loan Estimate so I can compare in writing?
  • How do you get paid, and does that change what I am offered?

You choose

You are always free to choose the lender that is right for you, no matter who recommends one. Compare written Loan Estimates, and pick the one that fits your goals and your timeline.
